Immersive Theatre: What Does it Mean to Us as Deaf Theatre Artists?

For Deaf and hard of hearing audience members, immersive theatre can be a different experience.

For shows to be immersive or interactive, they could pull volunteers from the audience and put you on the spot - or transport you through environments and experiences. You could become a character, touch a prop, and be one with the production.

But even with concepts as simple as escape rooms proving themselves inaccessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, accessibility is a challenge to think about when it comes to immersive theatre. How can theatre interact, pull you in, and reach a new level compared to before?

Protactile Theatre, in Seattle, Washington, explores Protactile and touch in a theatrical environment. Synetic Theatre in Washington, DC, often does shows in full gesture and mime with very little dialogue. Sleep No More by Punchdrunk, in New York City, transports you to another world with choreography and the environment.

We asked ourselves…

What does it mean to be an immersive production designed for deaf and hard of hearing patrons and how can we make it accessible for DeafBlind and Deaf+ patrons as well?

Why the Brothers Grimm?

The Brothers Grimm worked on documenting their German heritage, folklore, and language. In their quest to find their identity, morals, and roots, the artists at CDT see parallels in their life’s work with the journey of deaf people in our modern world.

Deaf artists are constantly in search of definition and documentation of our culture and history. A part of that recently came up for CDT in the conversation around immersive theatre.

The Brothers Grimm stories has been a recognizable source in literature, associated with familiar characters like Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel. We chose Jack Zipes’ translation due to his contemporary approach.

A Look into the Workshop

We had a blast in Hartford and Middletown, Connecticut for our rehearsals. Dive into each day to see what we were up to!

Day 1

We kicked off the morning with breakfast pastries from a local bakery and icebreakers! Then we dived into a discussion of the production vision and what stories stood out to us from the Brothers Grimm collection. Later in the day we warmed up with movement exercises.

At the end of the day we traveled to Gallaudet Square, at the junction of Asylum Street and Farmington Avenue. This square is the former location of the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons, which eventually moved to North Main Street and was renamed to become the American School for the Deaf.

Asylum Street is named after this institution and a street nearby is also named Cogswell Street, showing the influence of the Deaf history in this area of Hartford.

We’re honored and thrilled to be able to have our rehearsal studios and hotel on the street where a formative part of Deaf history happened.
